Summit Health & Fitness provides a falls prevention program in 12 nursing homes located in the Georges River, Bayside, Sutherland and Liverpool council areas. This initative commenced in
2008 and our aim was simple: reduce the number of avoidable falls and hospitalisation resulting from falls.
Our falls prevention program offers variation, fun and energetic facilitation to engage residents, increase participation and enjoyment levels. The group exercise provides residents with the
opportunity to participate in a safe and graded program. There is now clear evidence showing that exercise is beneficial for the prevention of falls in older people in particular exercises that
challenge balance, which differs from the traditional pre-recorded DVD conducted in a seated position which do not challenge balance.
Exercise Physiologists (EPs) are able to supervise and instruct group exercise programs. We deliver a focused program that aims to:
- Improve strength through resistance training
- Improve mobility and balance
- Reduce risk of falls in nursing homes
- Improve confidence activities of daily living
- Improve quality of life
- Opportunity for social interaction

If you don't use it ... you lose it
Resistance and weight bearing exercises is enhanced by gradually increasing muscle effort. Residents are encouraged to adopt different grades of Theraband or dumbbell weight as the exercise or
movement feels light or somewhat easy as defined by the Borg Rating of Perceived Exertion scale.
