Down Syndrome

Down Syndrome has a wide-range of musculoskeletal and neurological complications. The most common musculoskeletal impairment affects strength and conditioning, combined with reduced muscle tone and increased flexibility around joints.

Our exercise group offers a social, fun and friendly environment to participate in a supervised group exercise program. Each session is 60 minutes in duration and consists of of aerobic, strengthening, balance and recreational activities. The program is appropriate for all fitness and coordination abilities and the qualified instructor will offer different options and encourage people to participate at a comfortable intensity.

The fitness professional will suggest gradual progression and demonstrate patience, support and encouragement.

Benefits

  • Improve your cardiovascular fitness
  • Improve your strength, balance & co-ordination
  • Social interaction with other group members

What if I have joint or muscle pain?

Gym exercise is conducted by qualified fitness instructors who will ensure that the activities are safe and effective. Some exercises may not be suitable & participants will be instructed to complete an alternative.

The program is NOT a clinical rehabilitation program for acute conditions. If you have any acute joint and muscle pain or limitations, please discuss with your GP to gain medical clearance.
